Who can join KAVA - and why it's in your best interest to join

We are proud to announce a new organization on Kauai: KAVA. This non-profit Hawaii corporation is a professional business league as such, and will be representing vacation rental and B&B owners on Kauai.

Membership will be open to all TVR/B&B owners located in Residential, Open and Agriculturally zoned areas on Kauai. (If your property is located on Conservation Land, please click here to contact the appropriate group that may help you. We would still like to offer you membership (there is power in numbers), but we realize your legal position is more restricted.

We also offer Associate Membership to vacation rental management companies, and vacation rental owners on the other Hawaiian Islands.

KAVA is a non-profit 501(c)6 and all membership dues will be used for PR/advertising, legal, & accounting. The KAVA board & officers work on a strictly volunteer basis and receive no compensation for their work. All board members and officers are Kauai vacation rental owners.

Because we are a non-profit business league, membership dues & donations by KAVA members are 100% tax deductible as an advertising business expense. We can only accept membership by companies of a common business interest, and donations by non-members are not tax deductible.

  • Kava Full Membership
We accept full membership of the following
(Kauai resident and non-resident TVR/B&B owners):

  • Single-family vacation rental home owners
  • Multi-family vacation rental home owners
  • Bed & Breakfast owners
  • Inns, Cabins and Condos
  • Vacation Cottage owners

To be fair to all vacation rental owners we adopt the following membership dues policy:
  • Annual membership dues are due and payable now; and will in the future be invoiced between March 1st and March 31st of each year. Please make checks payable to KAVA Association or use PayPal to electronically submit your dues.
  • Membership dues are calculated by how many bedrooms your vacation property(s) has/have. Each bedroom shall account for $100 annual membership. (For example: If you vacation rent a one bedroom cottage your annual membership dues will be $100. If you have 2 one bedroom cottages your dues will be $200. If you have a B&B that rents 6 bedrooms your annual dues will be $600. This guarantees that membership dues will be fair to all members - because a larger property will have higher rental income then a 1 bedroom cottage, thus the higher membership dues.)

  • Member Benefits
Member benefits include but are not limited to the following:

  • PR & advertising for transient vacation rentals, farm stays, and B&B as a viable and important contribution to the island of Kauai, and Hawaiian tourism as a whole.
  • Vacation rental listing on KAVA website.
  • KAVA will act as an official representative of alternative vacation lodging to the Kauai & Hawaii Tourism Bureau.
If funds are sufficient we plan on running a full page ad in the official Hawaii travel magazine that is send to several hundred thousand travel agents around the globe. We want to make guests to Kauai aware that there is an alternative to resort travel. Through this travelers are advised of the KAVA website and can choose alternative accommodation through our vacation rental listing page. (We will set this up as soon as the County Council threat has passed.)
  • Member listing on KAVA website; including contact & property info, and link to member website & email.
  • Representation at County Council meetings.
  • Making available important information pertaining to vacation rental regulations on Kauai, and the industry in general. (We'll let members know what they have to do to obtain their permits.)
  • Legal representation of KAVA as a group of stakeholders & business associates should litigation become necessary*. As a group of affected business owners we can afford much better legal counsel then every family for themselves.

  • KAVA will organize a division handling "green options" for vacation rental owners on Kauai. Together we can make a difference in climate change. Volunteers please come forward.
  • KAVA will look into affordable group "vacation rental and B&B" home insurance.
  • KAVA Association representatives are on the "Kauai Tourism Strategic Plan Implementation Committee" and KAVA has been charged with informing the Kauai vacation rental industry of the Civil Defense procedures for emergencies on Kauai. This is obviously more difficult for properties where the owner is off island and KAVA will be suggesting procedures that will work with both the Owner, the community at large and the Civil Defense department, so keep checking for that Information on the website.

*Full members may be ask to contribute to a legal fund to help protect our vested property & economic rights.
